Hannah Borum

A lifelong academic overachiever and highly versatile and experienced tutor, Hannah has worked with hundreds of students of all ages and backgrounds to help them excel in such diverse subjects as English, History, Geometry, Spanish, ESL, ELA Philosophy, International Relations, and more. A graduate of Columbia University with a BA in English and Comparative Literature, Hannah can offer a wide breadth of interdisciplinary knowledge and has been tutoring privately and in group settings since she was in high school. When it comes to standardized test prep, Hannah shows kids how to develop their skills, reduce their anxieties and stress, and adapt to the format of the specific test, whether it be the SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, GRE, or TOEFL. All of her students have improved markedly and achieved consistently spectacular final results, gaining admission to their top choice schools and higher learning institutions. More important than the specific content knowledge and test-taking techniques, Hannah's students acquire, articulate, and exhibit a newfound appreciation for learning, enrichment, and integrity for both their scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. Striking a symbiotic balance between their lives and pursuits both in and out of the classroom engenders their overall confidence, work ethic, and commitment to perpetual enrichment. Last year, she helped 8 students prepare for the SHSAT, ISEE, and Hunter College High School Exam, all of whom scored in the top 10% and will be attending their top choice schools this Fall (High School for American Studies at Lehman College, Laguardia, Beacon, Packer, and Hunter College High School).

Hannah is well acquainted with the stress and anxiety created by its pressure-cooker academic environment. In spite of this atmosphere, she has helped her students solidify their skill sets and develop confidence in their own academic abilities. Along with an upbeat and empathic attitude, her methodology consists of a systematic, step-by-step break down and explanation of concepts and strategies that incorporates: refining and enhancing work ethic, memorization and recall techniques, stimulating communicative and analytical abilities through speech, peer review and group assignments, expository and creative composition exercises, vocabulary and idiomatic games, and reading comprehension exercises geared towards combining interactive platforms along with the more standardized contexts tested on the ELA, SHSAT, ISEE, SAT, ACT and so forth. Having worked with dozens of foreign exchange students (Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, German), Hannah draws upon her own multi-lingual aptitude and possesses a strong sense of the particularly challenging areas of English Language instruction facing students whose native language (often the primary language spoken in their homes) is not English. By tapping into these linguistic barriers, cognitive processing difficulties, and resistance to code-switching, Hannah always finds a way to get her students over the initial obstacles by inculcating an earnest sense of her investment in their progress. Hannah is not a tutor who specializes in test prep because of its necessity in the academic climate of NYC schools, but rather takes advantage of the pressure and intensity inherent to the process in order to make her students aware of their merits, strengths, and challenges, with the aim of better-equipping their endurance, resourcefulness, adaptability, and confidence.

She is currently available for extra sessions (private or group) for SHSAT prep - both verbal and math sections - as well as looking forward to teaching a few ELA specific group classes, focused more on enrichment than strictly test preparation.

Hannah lives in Williamsburg with her Catahoula Leopard pup Finn, and spends her free time playing tennis, volleyball, and rock-climbing and enjoys discovering the intersections of cross-cultural current events, literature, and art, attending galleries, artistic and music performances, and sports.
