Important announcements

Dear Parents,

This is information for the parents of the children who will apply to Staten Island Tech, Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, and other Specialized High Schools in 2014. In October 2014 your child has to take the NYC Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT). Regardless where you are currently preparing (either in SchoolPlus or independently), SchoolPlus offers a unique opportunity in practicing real format SHSAT tests including both Verbal and Math parts.

The goal of such practice sessions is to develop and improve the test-taking skills, gain the time management skills, find gaps in subject areas, and, as a result, increase students’ understanding in each topic. Unlike our regular SHSAT Prep classes where we learn all topics included in SHSAT curriculum and practice on a particular material without timing, these SHSAT Practice Tests sessions teach students to answer questions on different subjects at one time, having on average only 90 seconds per question. Our many years experience shows that even good knowledge of English and Math is not enough to succeed in taking the real SHSAT Test. We believe that students should practice at least twenty tests of a higher level to be well prepared. For example, the tests that are presented in standard SHSAT Prep books like Kaplan, Princeton Review, or Barron’s are significantly easier than the real test that your child will take in October. SchoolPlus SHSAT practice tests are formed from the high-level verbal and math questions and fully prepare the students to pass the real test. Every year since 2005 almost all students who finished our SHSAT test preparation program, got admission to Staten Island Tech or Stuyvesant. Last year, 26 our students successfully passed the SHSAT entrance examination.

We run our SHSAT Practice Tests preparation sessions in two centers:
(1) Sundays: 2:00 – 4:30 pm at the College of Staten Island, Bulding 3N, room 110
(2) Fridays: 6:00 – 8:30 pm in I.S.2, 333 Midland Avenue, Staten Island.

If you are interested in taking the SHSAT Practice Tests in Brooklyn and Queens, please contact Irina Goldman at 718-524-4443 or SchoolPlusNY@yahoo.com

Every week a new test will run twice in the above centers. You may choose any convenient location. The official full-length SHSAT test is 150 minutes long and consists of 100 questions (50 verbal and 50 math questions). As of now, the students are not ready yet to take the full test. We run half-length tests (25 verbal and 25 math questions) from January to June 2014 and full-length tests from August to October 2014.

Each session lasts 2.5 hours and consists of two parts:
- writing SHSAT practice test (75 minutes)
- reviewing and explaining all the questions (75 minutes)
The students receive the detailed report at the end of every session. Each report indicates the topics included in the practice test and shows which questions were solved incorrectly. The test conditions are similar to the official test environment.

In spring semester 2014 we offer 20 SHSAT Practice Tests from January 24 to June 22.
The first SHSAT test will be on Friday, January 24, and Sunday, January 26.

Tuition fee:
(1) Full package (20 Tests) – $800 ($40 per 150 minute session). If you miss a test, you can take a make up class in another location.
(2) 10-Tests package – $450 ($45 per 150 minute session). If you miss a test, you can take a make up class in another location.
(3) Pay as you go – $55 per 150 minute session.
